This week’s Selah explores Kavvanah —the Hebraic practice of intention, direction, and consciously orienting ourselves toward what we choose to cultivate.
Over the past several weeks, we’ve practiced noticing our thoughts and emotions, becoming aware of our reactions, and discovering the space in which we can choose our response.
Kavvanah takes us one step further:
If I can choose where I direct my attention, what do I want to cultivate?
In this meditation, we use heart-focused breathing and the felt experience of appreciation to explore the connection between mind, body, emotion, and spirit.
Rather than simply thinking about what we are grateful for, we practice actually experiencing gratitude—allowing appreciation to become a state we can intentionally return to.
Kavvanah asks: What am I aiming toward?
Awareness asks: Where am I now?
Shalom asks: Am I moving toward wholeness and right relationship?
Ha-Chayyim asks: Does this choice support life?

This week’s Selah practice: Once each day, spend five minutes with one thing you genuinely appreciate. Remember it. Feel it. Stay with the feeling. Then notice what happens in your body, your mood, and the way you meet what comes next.
Don’t just think gratitude. Practice the feeling of gratitude.
